The Island I Will Miss

The island I will miss and I will not forget

Even after my death

When I have nothing left

My memory lives on from sunset to sunset

As I leave this island and the people that I have adored

I will miss the radiance of my people and my land

I will not forget

I will not allow time to cloud my memory

And make remembrance faint and misty

I will not forget

The gorgeous nights

With stars all in sight

Twinkling

Winking

Stretching light through a velvet sky

That memory will never die

The island I will miss and I will not forget

Even after my death

When I have nothing left

My memory lives on from sunset to sunset

As my thoughts walk along avenues of years

The road down memory lane is covered with pale moonlight

But the asphalt shows me the way through

I will not forget

The gentle laughter of children flowing like breeze

The inviting and blooming hibiscus trees

I will not forget

The mornings filled with splendour

The beautiful painted evenings I shall remember

The gleaming of our days

The earth’s blooming green for which I am amazed

Quenched by the raindrops

With the bliss that never stops

The island I will miss and I will not forget

Even after my death

When I have nothing left

My memory lives on from sunset to sunset

The warm and cool seas

The glittering river of the splashing waves

The incalculable beauty of the Pitons

The inexhaustible warmth of the Sulphur Springs

I will not forget

The velvet mist of the mountains

The avalanche of streams like fountains

I will not forget

The great Diamond Falls

With all its jewellery for all

The incandescent splashes of waves hitting cliffs

The botanical sea garden of reefs

The fishermen casting their crochet nets

Seabirds in a Venn diagram forming subsets

The island I will miss and I will not forget

Even after my death

When I have nothing left

My memory lives on from sunset to sunset

The staring eyes of the poor

The greedy mouths of the rich

The sunshine of the giving

And the many faces as numerous as the stars

I will not forget

The diversity of races

With a conventional love that amalgamates us to these places

I will not forget

The several bronzed bodies

The shimmering eyes with glinting that will never cease

The light-hearted laughter

The gladsome air I will always remember

My memory is collected and stored in a golden basket

That memory lives on from sunset to sunset
