Solemn Twilight
As the day grew unconscious
They weak sun subdued by a hungry horizon
Smell of twilight in thy sea’s breath
Be natural as breathing is death
Of a sun drowned in a sea as smooth as glass
O death! There is thy victory
O life! There is thy loss
In thy marriage of sea and sky
In this wedlock thy light must die
With falling dew thy weep of thy night
Waves cease to break into grey-ness
Thy moon will dance on thy smooth water
Stars will shine like pinheads from a black cushion
Staining the sky with spangles of a billion
To watch thy light’s funeral
O death! There is they victory
O life! There is thy loss
In thy marriage of sea and sky
In this wedlock thy light must die
With falling dew thy weep of thy night
Ebb and flow were a mournful silence
From a polished icy surface
With winds above to recite a cheerless psalm
Thy winds’ symphony like a windless day so calm
Thy night will squat upon thy ground
O death! There is thy victory
O life! There is thy loss
In thy marriage of sea and sky
In this wedlock thy light must die
With falling dew thy weep of thy night
But tomorrow morning unfolds with a yawn
Rising to unconsciousness standing tiptoe
Morning, why should we live another day and die?
In a solemn twilight why should we cry?
So be happy when thy day is young but sad when it grows old
O death! There is thy victory
O life! There is thy loss
In thy marriage of sea and sky
In this wedlock thy light must die
With falling dew thy weep of thy night
