This module is designed to equip Peace Corps volunteers with essential knowledge and skills in basic healthcare and first aid to effectively address common health issues within their assigned communities. Volunteers will also learn how to navigate and access medical care resources in their host country.

 

Module Objectives:

  1. Understand the common health challenges prevalent in the community.
  2. Acquire basic knowledge of healthcare practices to promote community well-being.
  3. Develop first aid skills to provide immediate assistance in emergencies.
  4. Learn to assess and prioritize health issues within the cultural context of the host country.
  5. Gain the ability to communicate effectively with local healthcare providers and community members.
  6. Understand the importance of preventive healthcare measures.

 

Module Structure:

 

  1. Introduction to Community Health (1 session)

   – Overview of community health challenges.

   – Understanding cultural factors influencing health practices.

   – Importance of community engagement in healthcare.

 

  1. Basic Healthcare Practices (3 sessions)

   – Hygiene and sanitation in the community.

   – Nutrition and its impact on health.

   – Common illnesses and preventive measures.

 

  1. First Aid Training (4 sessions)

   – Basic life support techniques.

   – Managing wounds, burns, and fractures.

   – Handling medical emergencies (e.g., choking, seizures).

   – Understanding and responding to environmental emergencies.

 

  1. Accessing Medical Care in the Host Country (2 sessions)

   – Introduction to the local healthcare system.

   – Navigating cultural and language barriers in healthcare.

   – Emergency medical services and transportation.

 

  1. Practical Simulations and Role Plays (3 sessions)

   – Hands-on first aid simulations.

   – Role plays for effective communication with community members and healthcare providers.

   – Scenario-based problem-solving to apply learned concepts.

 

Assessment:
