Getting Started with Basic Sewing Tools
The five main categories of tools include Measuring, Marking, Cutting, Pressing and Sewing.
Two categories will be explained below
Measuring
One of the initial steps in sewing involves Measuring. The more precise your measurements the better will be the end product. Here are the essentials you should have:
1) See-through rulers: A see-through ruler lets you see what you’re measuring and gives you precise horizontal and vertical lines.
2) Seam gauge: This is a small ruler with a double-pointed sliding guide. It’s good for marking seam allowances, hems or small measurements.
3) Tape measure: The traditional sewing notion. You can use it for measuring pillow shapes, lining up patterns and more.
Marking
There are special items for marking on fabric. Here are some;
1) Pens: These may be designed with either air-soluble or water-soluble ink so you can make short-term lines and dots on your fabric. Air-soluble means the marks will sooner or later disappear. Water-soluble means you need to clean the marks with water.
2) Chalk: this chalk is made for fabric and is very easy to take out. It looks like a solid rectangle or square, giving you good hard edges for long marks. It gives a precise mark that is not messy.
