Technical Drawing Instruments Part 1

In Technical Drawing students convey their ideas using drawings through the handling of their instruments. These instruments are known as drawing tools and are used to perform a drawing with pace, precision and accuracy.

T-Square

This instrument has two components: first is the blade which has a drawing edge and second the stock which moves up and down the left or right edge of the drawing board. This instrument is used to draw horizontal lines and together with the set- squares can draw vertical and angular lines. The T-Square can be made from wood, plastic, metal or a mixture of all.

Set Squares

You have two types of set squares the 45 degree type and the 30 degree/ 60 degree type. You should possess both set squares. They can be used separately or together to make precise angles and parallel lines. The Set-Square can be made from wood, plastic or metal.

Drawing Board

You should place the drawing paper on this tool.  The drawing board’s face must be smooth and level. Note that the left and right edges must be straight to allow free uphill and downhill motion by the t-square.

Compass

This instrument is used to sketch circles and arcs. At one end of the Compass is a metal point that is used to rotate the compass. At the other end of the compass there is a pencil tip which is used to draw the circles and arcs.

Dividers

This instrument is used to convey measurements from the ruler or scale rule to the drawing paper or on the other hand from one location on the drawing to another.  You have metal point ends at both points of the dividers.
