The functions of the family
The functions of the family in contemporary Caribbean society
(1) As a unit of reproduction or breeding
(2) As a social unit for bring up
children, namely, the socialization of
the individual;
(3) As a monetary unit for satisfying
basic needs;
(4) As a social unit for pleasing
emotional and mental
needs.
Reproduction or procreation is an essential function of family. This function contributes to the permanence of family and eventually perpetuates the entire human race.
Family is one of the main mediators of socialization. Family members educate the child about the norms, value morals, beliefs and ideals of society. The children first learn what is good and bad, what is right and wrong via the family. Children grow particular habits, traits of personality, attitudes and principles.
The family supposes to provide basic needs such as food, water, clothing and shelter. All of these require some form of financing.
The family is there to help the child and members emotionally and mentally.
