THE SIX TYPES OF NUTRIENTS

Water

It is an important nutrient. Your body is roughly 50 percent water that is why it is so important. Your body utilizes water daily. Water controls your body temperature by driving away heat. Water also transports nutrients to the cells in your body.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the major source of energy for your body. Carbohydrates give energy to different parts of your body, including your brain, muscles and organs. Carbohydrates include sugar, syrup, starch, whole grain etc… Carbohydrates are the major source of fuel for our bodies and brains especially during physical activity.

Protein

It is the foundation that provides the composition for the tissues of your body. Proteins help to build your body. Proteins uphold the growth, repair and maintenance of tissues.

 

Fats

Fats are like storerooms of energy. The principal purpose of fat is energy storage. Examples of fats include butter, lard, olive oil, corn oil etc… There are some fats called omega-3 fatty acids found in some fish that are used to help our immune system. Fats are also a source of heat insulation and body cushioning (body protection).

 

 

 

Vitamins

Vitamins are necessary for the regulation of many of the functions of the body. You get vitamins from food and other sources like from the sun you get vitamin D. Vitamins are a vital nutrient because they construct and maintain healthy bones and muscle tissue. They also help our immune system and sustain the wellbeing of our blood. Another function is to maintain a healthy vision like vitamin A.

 

 

Minerals

Minerals can be found in your diet that helps to form the structures of your body. For example calcium is a mineral that is essential in the development and repairs of your bones. Minerals also facilitate to regulate body functions.
