The Arawaks
They came to the new islands before the Caribs
Journeyed through the chain of the Lesser Antilles
They reached the Bahamas, while the others
The Greater Antilles, building cities
When the Spaniards came, they were found in the Bahamas and Cuba,
Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and Jamaica
The Bahamas, the home of the Lucayos
And the rest except Puerto Rico, the Tianos
The Lucayos peaceful and practically weaponless
While the Puerto Rican Borinquens were warlike and ruthless
The fierce Caribs came pushing out the Arawaks
Like day pushing night, claiming islands and landmarks
Caribs established themselves in parts of Hispaniola
Eastern Puerto Rico and the islands of Cuba
Caribs were resisted in the placed called Trinidad
By the Arawaks who all stood on their safeguard
As established as a foundation in Puerto Rico
And in Hispaniola, Cuba under Caonobo
