Distinguish between data and information

Data as raw unprocessed facts; information as processed data

 

Data is raw, unorganized facts that need to be processed. Data can be something straightforward and apparently unsystematic until it is structured.

 

When data is processed, structured, ordered or presented in a given way so as to make it valuable, it is called Information.

 

Key difference: Data and information are interconnected. Data usually refers to raw facts, or unprocessed data. It is the basic form of facts, what that hasn’t been examined or processed in any way. When the data is analyzed or processed, it is said to be information. Information is processed data. Information is a series of language code that can be understood as a message. It provides understanding about something

 

Some differences between data and information:

Data is used as input/what you put into the computer system. Information is the output of data.

Data is unprocessed; not analyzed facts and figures. Information is processed data.

Data doesn’t rely on Information. Information relies on data.

Data is not detailed. Information is detailed.

Data is a single entity. Information is a collection of data which carries meaning.

Data carries little meaning. Information must carry a logical meaning.

Data is like the raw material. Information is the product that you get.
